A Light at the End of the Tunnel

I've been on the phone with GoDaddy tech support for upwards of four hours today, and I wanted to let you all know the results.

First of all, I got the domain ( transferred.  It's still propagating, but it should be ready once the site comes up.  Second, I signed up for their premium support (ugh - more money), and I've got them working on transferring the directory of the old version of the site to the new version.  Basically, when they get done, the site should work exactly as it did before.  However, because it's kind of a long, tedious process, it probably won't be done today.  Their ETA is 24-48 hours, but in the worst case scenario (which I've been assured won't happen), it will take 72 hours.

So - why has it taken so long?  I know some of you must be wondering this.  And I feel an obligation to be as transparent as possible with what I'm doing to make this work.  Ultimately, it comes down to me being a bit reactionary with my first choice of web hosts.  I've mentioned it before, but I originally chose HostGator (they popped up as first on one of the web hosts that allow adult content).  I should've done a little more research, because not only was their service horrible (I was waiting 3 whole days for something that ultimately never happened), but their servers were extremely slow as well.  I'm so glad I pulled the plug on that.

That said, those three days were, well, three days where I wasn't making any progress toward getting the site back up, which put me behind schedule.  And after my transfer yesterday didn't yield the results I wanted (the directory didn't go where it was supposed to), I had to admit that I was in a bit over my head (with the site migration).  That's when I decided to pay GoDaddy to simply do it for me.

And that's where I am now.  Aside from importing member information, this should be the final step.  And so, I'm just waiting, hoping that this never happens again.  I think I've done what I can to ensure that it won't, but who knows when someone's going to change their terms of service?

Anyway - to the making amends part.  Once everything's back up, I intend to give my latest book "Little Man" to all the holders of current memberships (gold and platinum alike).  In addition, I'll be in touch with platinum members to let them know how I'm going to make it up to them.

I hope that goes a little ways to easing the inconvenience of the site being down for a few days.  Like I've said before, I apologize for the way this went down.  It's purely my fault for not anticipating this when I originally set up the account.  In my defense, though, I'm just a writer.  Aside from getting a crash course in website management in the past few months, I really don't know all that much about this.  I just hope to get better as the days go on.

Thanks again for understanding.
